Chodron as she shares on how the practice of forgiveness can help us to heal from harm and free us from contributing to a continuing cycle of violence.
Ven Dhammadaasa Destination Wisdom – Many people understand that the Buddha’s teaching is about giving up dogma, but few seem to be able to identify dogma in their understanding of Dhamma. For some Dharma practitioners, particularly those living in the West, self-compassion can be a vital missing component of a Buddhist practice. Yet if we can learn to cultivate compassion for ourselves in times of struggle, then we are far more likely to respond compassionately to others. When we are harsh on ourselves, we tend to be harsh on others as well. In this workshop, Sarah will explore the reasons we don’t practice self compassion as well as some ways to bring a practice of self compassion into our lives.

Jim Teoh Destination Impermanence – This topic looks into the Buddhist definition of impermanence as one of the universal characteristics and its relationship to the other two characteristics of unsatisfactoriness and non-self. This session discusses how this understanding can help a person to practise so as to lead a more fruitful life.

Keeping it Real – Living Gratitude (by Ven. Huifeng)

We live in a world of incessant consumerism, where the latest objects of desire are constantly being updated and outdated. It is easy to fall onto a treadmill of constant desire where satisfaction becomes about having the ‘latest’ and trying to keep up with others. In this talk, Venerable Huifeng invites us to understand the true causes of contentment, and become aware of the happiness that is available to us right here and now.

What is this Mind? Know I, No Me, I Know (by H.E. Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche)

As we live day-to-day we tend to accept our reality and who we are without question. It is all too easy to forget the miracle of existence, created by our mind, and our place in it. In this discussion, H.E. Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche addresses the importance of knowing ourselves, in relation to our mind and the world around us, in a way that minimises our suffering and that of others.

Mindfulness in the Digital Age (by Ven. Sujato)

Are progress, technology and multi-tasking the enemies of mindfulness? Our lives are increasingly complex and busy, from cities and cyborgs to gadgets and Google. Can we actually live mindfully in a fast paced world, or are there too many distractions to remain present and aware in every moment? Experienced living in both remote hermitages and interfacing with the latest technology, hear what Venerable Sujato has to say about this challenging, compromising and all-pervading issue.

Causes of Mindfulness (by Ven. Brahmali)

Mindfulness is often spoken about and many people strive to achieve it. Benefits of mindfulness include a greater sense of wellbeing, inner peace, and increased appreciation of the world around us. However it is easy to forget that mindfulness does not just happen, nor is it exclusive to those in the realm of monastics. Venerable Brahmali will explain how we can all achieve mindfulness through the necessity of virtue (what we should and shouldn’t do), including mental virtue. Without a solid basis and the continuous development of virtue, mindfulness can be stressful! Mindfulness should be natural and easy, yet is achievable only with a pure mind.

Fruits of Clear Comprehension (by Ven. Dhammadhira)

Two people can share the same experience yet interpret it in entirely different ways. For instance, in the face of adverse circumstances one person may become confused or upset while another may find value and meaning. We often hear about mindfulness but overlook its close companion of clear comprehension. Clear comprehension (sampajanna in Pali) provides the context and purpose to our meditation practice in a way that yields the most complete results. Venerable Dhammadhira will not only remind us how to accomplish clear comprehension but also the importance of achieving it. It is not merely about sharpening a tool, but knowing how to skillfully use it. From her experiences in the United States desert to a Southern Highlands Monastery, hear this unique reflection on the benefits to understanding what really goes on in your mind.

Creating Authentic and Compassionate Relationships (by Ven. Thubten Chodron)

Television and other media frequently bombard us with stereotypes of so called ‘perfect’ relationships that are neither realistic nor fulfilling. The truth is tantalising – that rewarding relationships are both achievable and rewarding. Venerable Thubten Chodron returns to the Mitra Conference to help us understand how to form and nurture authentic, compassionate relationships in both peaceful and trying times.

Psychology Meets Buddhism (by Ven. Guo Jun)

Psychology, the science of the mind, has different roots to Buddhism but arguably many common goals. Keeping it Real – Living Gratitude (by Ven. Huifeng)

We live in a world of incessant consumerism, where the latest objects of desire are constantly being updated and outdated. It is easy to fall onto a treadmill of constant desire where satisfaction becomes about having the ‘latest’ and trying to keep up with others. In this talk, Venerable Huifeng invites us to understand the true causes of contentment, and become aware of the happiness that is available to us right here and now.

What is this Mind? Know I, No Me, I Know (by H.E. Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche)

As we live day-to-day we tend to accept our reality and who we are without question. It is all too easy to forget the miracle of existence, created by our mind, and our place in it. Television and other media frequently bombard us with stereotypes of so called ‘perfect’ relationships that are neither realistic nor fulfilling. The truth is tantalising – that rewarding relationships are both achievable and rewarding. Venerable Thubten Chodron returns to the Mitra Conference to help us understand how to form and nurture authentic, compassionate relationships in both peaceful and trying times.

Psychology Meets Buddhism (by Ven. Guo Jun)

Psychology, the science of the mind, has different roots to Buddhism but arguably many common goals. For example, both are concerned with how a person’s thoughts and beliefs influence their sense of wellbeing. With an interdisciplinary background Venerable Guo Jun will offer a refreshing perspective on this topic, discussing how Psychology and Buddhism relate to and can mutually inform one another.

Ven Thubten Chodron Destination Forgiveness – “An eye for an eye, thumb a tooth for a tooth.” Are anger and vengeance the only ways to respond when we experience harm? Join Ven. Chodron as she shares on how the practice of forgiveness can help us to heal from harm and free us from contributing to a continuing cycle of violence.
Ven Dhammadaasa Destination Wisdom – Many people understand that the Buddha’s teaching is about giving up dogma, but few seem to be able to identify dogma in their understanding of Dhamma. Ven Dhammadaasa has found the key to doing so in the quote from the Buddha that says: “Do not say ‘this is the truth’ but rather “I believe this… (is the truth).” This may not be so compatible with popular ideas that the Buddha taught “there is no-self” and that we should avoid ideas of “I” and “mine”.
Ven Guo Jun Destination Right Effort – Have you ever felt stagnant in your spiritual practice? Are you hitting the snooze button instead of the meditation cushion? Do you find it hard to practice in a busy environment full of distractions and do you feel you are not getting anywhere lately? In this workshop, Ven. Guo Jun will explore the concept of Right Effort and how to apply it diligently to your practice.
Alexandra Yuille  & Debbie Whitney  Destination Compassion – In this workshop, Alexandra and Debbie will explore what compassion is and what it is not. We will also explore contemplative practices that help us develop compassion and spend time experiencing a guided meditation to get us started on this transformative journey. These practices are based on the teachings of Sogyal Rinpoche, author of the highly acclaimed Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.
Phil Carlisle  Destination Emptiness – In the 8thcentury AD, the Indian Yogi Saraha said “People who think that things are real are as stupid as a cow; People who think things are not real are even more stupid.” What did he mean? This workshop will explore the Buddhist view of emptiness from a few different angles and see what science thinks as well
Grahame White Destination Urban Mindfulness – In this workshop Grahame will discuss practical strategies using mindfulness exercises to cultivate inner equanimity and balance for city living. The meditative exercises will be based on The Four applications of Mindfulness – the heart of the Buddha’s teachings.

Ven Thubten Choden Destination Awareness – In this workshop Ven. Thubten Choden will explore how we can improve our awareness and experience stress-free mindful living in our daily lives. She will share her insights on how we all can develop a practice based on mindfulness of body, speech and mind.
Sarah Napthali Destination Self-Compassion – Have you ever felt like a failure at meditation? Maybe you have beaten yourself up for not responding in a “Buddhist” way when things go wrong. For some Dharma practitioners, particularly those living in the West, self-compassion can be a vital missing component of a Buddhist practice. Yet if we can learn to cultivate compassion for ourselves in times of struggle, then we are far more likely to respond compassionately to others. When we are harsh on ourselves, we tend to be harsh on others as well. In this workshop, Sarah will explore the reasons we don’t practice self compassion as well as some ways to bring a practice of self compassion into our lives.
Chien Hoong Gooi Destination Light-heartedness - Many people are searching for happiness and greater contentment in life. This workshop discusses the question of being a cup half full or half empty type of person and explores the various practices that help individuals live a meaningful life. It brings together the timeless wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings and findings from contemporary scientific and social research. The various practices are introduced in a step-by-step manner, providing helpful guidance to the way we live and the way we deepen our spiritual practice.
Jim Teoh Destination Impermanence – This topic looks into the Buddhist definition of impermanence as one of the universal characteristics and its relationship to the other two characteristics of unsatisfactoriness and non-self. This session discusses how this understanding can help a person to practise so as to lead a more fruitful life.

Keeping it Real – Living Gratitude (by Ven. Huifeng)

We live in a world of incessant consumerism, where the latest objects of desire are constantly being updated and outdated. It is easy to fall onto a treadmill of constant desire where satisfaction becomes about having the ‘latest’ and trying to keep up with others. In this talk, Venerable Huifeng invites us to understand the true causes of contentment, and become aware of the happiness that is available to us right here and now.

What is this Mind? Know I, No Me, I Know (by H.E. Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche)

As we live day-to-day we tend to accept our reality and who we are without question. It is all too easy to forget the miracle of existence, created by our mind, and our place in it. In this discussion, H.E. Aenpo Kyabgon Rinpoche addresses the importance of knowing ourselves, in relation to our mind and the world around us, in a way that minimises our suffering and that of others.

We are organising the next Mitra conference where speakers and delegates from all denominations of Buddhism come together to learn and share the Buddhist teachings. Mitra Education Team

We are after Buddhists who are passionate about sharing the Dharma and who also enjoy working with young people to take part in the Mitra Education team.

The objectives of the education team are to:

Provide University Buddhist society committee members with the skills to run their society, check
including those on how to run a Buddhist society and the key Buddhist teachings

This will usually involve organising a one day intervarsity workshop in February and a second workshop during the year which is relevant to University students.

Commitment

The team will organise 1-2 events per year. These events will typically have a lead time of 2-3 months, rubella
but are up to 1 day long only. The roles should not involve much work outside of these periods.

What we are looking for

1 x Team manager

With the support of the Mitra committee, the team manager will be responsible for overseeing the organisation of educational workshops for committee members from various University Buddhist societies. This includes liaising with societies regarding dates, coordinating speakers, topics, location and catering.

2 x workshop coordinators

The workshop coordinators will assist the team manager in performing their tasks

What’s in it for you?

The role is suited for anyone who wants to re-engage with Buddhism, are keen to share their interest in Buddhism or want to give back to the Buddhist community. The role will also provide an opportunity to meet people with similar interests.
